Impeachment...End Game

Have you been watching what has to be the most boring and maddening event that I've witnessed in a very long time.  I say witnessed, but that isn't quite right.  When the House managers are talking I try and listen but inevitably I get all pissed off and turn it off.  As the trial drags on the time I can stand it is growing less and less.  And even though I'm on their side, the defense team's oratory grows tedious after not too long.  They are both convinced they are right.  They are both strident.  They both speak in such hyperbolic terms that it is difficult to pay attention without guffawing.  It's truly a Mars/Venus approach.  One side would have us believe that Trump is the biggest threat to the country in history.  That he is a loathsome traitor that would sell us out to the Russians for a couple of nickels.  And the other side defends his actions as normal and not out of ordinary.  But it's Trump we're talking about.  Nothing about him is normal and ordinary.  He didn't do anything that any other President hasn't done  (and certainly isn't impeachable) but in a few instances you have to squint sorta hard to say it was all okay.

And then they get to the question and answer portion and it is an exercise in asking questions that confirm that Senators think we are all stupid.  It's like they don't think we know that this is all choreographed.  Like we think the Senators just spontaneously ask a question to the side they favor that allows them to pontificate on either how much of a criminal Trump is or how stupid the House managers are.  It's just so...tiresome.  And the other thing is we all know the outcome.  There is no way that they get to 67 votes.  Nor should they.  And this big thing about witnesses is just made up by the media to get us to watch.  You know, watch for the sensationalism.  Watch for the pillorying.  Watch so that you can agree with what we say afterward in the "analysis".  Watch for to see the beans being spilled.  Except that there aren't any beans to spill.  So if you're waiting with baited breath for drama, go watch Netflix instead.

I have come away from this whole thing with a few thoughts.

  • A few zealots in the House can be a pain in the ass.  Schiff and Nadler are clearly hyper-partisan assholes.  And I mean major league assholes.  And they have been proven to be liars.  There's literally no rational human following this that doesn't know that Schiff orchestrated this whole thing with a bunch of hyper-partisan Obama supporters.  They refuse to name the whistleblower when literally everyone inside the beltway and anyone who has followed this sham knows his name.  That they have put the country through this should be grounds for at least an ass-whipping out behind the Congressional parking lot.
  • It's good that we have divided government.  It's good that the Senate can hold the line.  Because  if they didn't, we'd be removing a President for not much.  And for doing stuff that every other President has done. Which leads me to...
  • I believe that the President is a rude and crude jackass, but he hasn't done anything impeachable.  Charging obstruction of Congress because he went to court to defy subpoenas and claim executive privilege is a very, very, very long stretch.  And charging abuse of power over the phone call and how he acted in trying to discover corruption doesn't even pass the laugh test.  If these are the standards, then we're in trouble.  Which makes me think...
  • Somehow this needs to be walked back.  We cannot try to impeach a President just because some people hate him.  That's a road we don't want to go down.  It will cause the government to be even more useless than it is.  Dangerously useless.  Somehow they've got to get a few adults in a back room and agree to knock that shit off.  When some idiot like Schiff starts making noises about impeachment, he needs to be slapped down.
  • And finally the Dems are literally handing reelection to Trump.  They have traitors, bumblers, and idiots running for President.  I've said it before and I'll say it again.  All they have to do is find a likable, personable, charismatic, somewhat smart person (man or woman) who is not a raving lunatic and they could win.  I think this is on the DNC.  They cowtow to every crazy (literally crazy...see here) idea from the left and the rest of us just shake our heads.  I like Trump's results but I'm exhausted by his antics.  I would listen to a reasonable alternative.  But there aren't any of those in site.
